Great Torrington made the most beautiful backdrop for our daughters wedding last June. A lovely, happy day celebrating with family and friends here on the farm.

]]><![CDATA[Harvest.]]>Sat, 11 Aug 2018 21:30:31 GMThttp://www.week-farm.co.uk/blog/harvest'So harvest for most farmers is drawing to an end, crops are gathered in ready to be sold or used in the winter. The summer has been ‘warm’, to say the least, but also challenging as crops need rain as well as sun to mature and swell. But we have enjoyed the chance to harvest on time… with the occasional BBQ thrown in.
This year we have made our own apple juice, I can’t bear seeing the apples rotting on the ground and there are only so many 'apple crumbles' and 'apple cakes' a person can eat!.....( and that's is quite a few, by the way).... so we bought ourselves a second hand press and plan to make some more juice soon, delicious!

A new arrival to our garden here on the farm, he doesn't eat much and doesn't make much noise..... but he is a very 'happy chappy!'

The Tarka Trail runs for many miles through country and coastline, bikes are for hire and is only a half a mile from Torrington. A great way to see the area, have a cheeky cream tea and get fit..... all at the same time!! This photo was taken when we started the Hospice night walk.

So a new year begins with all the twists and turns that come with farming life. We are getting ready to start lambing, which is always a busy, but rewarding time.
Our local beaches are beautiful at this time of year too, there is nothing better than a wild and windy walk and then coming home to apple crumble and custard and a warm up by the fire.
I wonder if we will get snow this year, it has avoided us so far. We will see!

So the year starts again, here at Week Farm we wish all our friends 'old' and 'new' a very Happy New Year and hope that 2017 will be a good, happy and healthy one.
Now is the time that we start thinking about lambing. We need to get the pens up and prepare ourselves for busy days and long, cold nights.
Lambing will begin the first week of February and, for us, lasts about two months.
This picture shows our horse 'Blue' sharing his breakfast with some cheeky sheep who have decided that it's easier to snack from the haynet than to find grass in the field!

It's a time for long walks, log fires when you get home and homemade apple crumble with lashings of custard!
It's a time of plenty for the birds and a time when you can reflect on the year, having reaped the harvest and prepared for winter.

We have finished the harvest....... all is safely gathered in, and now we are preparing the soil and re-planting for next year. These pictures show us drilling oil seed rape seed ready for next years harvest. (Oil seed rape is the crop with the bright yellow flowers and is mainly used for producing cooking oil.)
Life on the farm changes with the seasons, and that is what keeps it interesting and always busy.

Harvest time is crazy yet amazing, it's a time when all the many hours spent in the fields come to fruition and you reap the benefits of your hard work. We hope that this years summer will bring us long dry days and warm peaceful nights.... I guess we will just have to watch the next forecast to see if that is going to happen!

You don't have to look far to see new life growing and blossoming all around us. Here on the farm we are nurturing this years lambs and, as we get closer to putting the cattle out after a long winter, we are sowing grass seed in damaged fields and making the fences stock proof. The hope of longer and warmer days give us a spring in our step and a smile on our faces.
